BIOGRAPHY

Cynthia Hartling received her BFA from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York. She has also studied at the Istituto Statale d'Arte in Urbino, Italy and at SUNY, New Paltz.

She has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions in New York City at Lesley Heller Fine Art, Sideshow Gallery, Janet Kurnatowski, ATM Gallery, N3 Project Space, Pierogi2000, the Brooklyn Museum, Exit Art, Im n il, Dam Stuhltrager Gallery, the New York Academy of Sciences, Cynthia Broan Gallery, and the Jamaica Arts Center.

In addition, her work has been shown at Beverley Knowles Fine Art, London; Shellnutt Gallery at Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY; Brownson Gallery at Manhattanville College, Purchase, NY; and the Berkshire Museum, Pittsfield, MA.

She has been the recipient of a Milton and Sally Michel Avery endowed residency for visual arts at Yaddo, a Barbara White endowed painting award at Vermont Studio Center, a visual artist fellowship at the Fundacion Valparaiso, Spain, The Art Farm in Nebraska and at the Jentel Art Residency in Wyoming.

Reviews of her work have appeared in The Brooklyn Rail, Artcritical, The New Yorker, NYArts Magazine, and PBS television series, City Arts. Her work has also been featured in the magazine The Sciences and on the cover of Sharmila Voorakkara's book of poems FireWheel. She is currently working on a new set of drawings to be published alongside Voorakkara’s poems. The artist lives and works in New York City.
